Trends / Unique Itineraries & Tours

Rio de Janeiro knows how to throw a party. The festivals of this city are known to bring some of the biggest crowds in the world, and Réveillon is no exception. Rio’s New Year’s celebration even holds the record for the largest concert ever attended, with 3.5 million packing into Copacabana beach for Rod Stewart.

The first thing to know about Réveillon is its all-white dress code. Symbolizing peace, purity and renewal, the color white is a holdover from Candomblé traditions, appeasing the religion’s mother Lemanjá, the goddess of the sea and patron saint of women. Wearing black is a bad omen for the New Year, but you’ll see splashes of red (romance), green (health), yellow (wealth) and blue (peace) among the sea of white.

With so many people coming to Rio, there are a few different kinds of parties. Copacabana is more family-oriented, while Ipanema has a younger crowd looking to party, in addition to the lively Cariocas, home to the city’s gay community.

The party usually starts at the stroke of midnight, with one of the most explosive firework displays you’ve ever seen. This is followed by the annual Candomblé tradition of purifying yourself in the water. As you make your way in, jump seven waves and make a wish with each one. Don’t look back until you’ve finished, or Lemanjá will not be pleased!
