Review: Andaz Mayakoba Resort

This past December, Hyatt Hotels Corporation announced the opening of Andaz Mayakoba Resort Riviera Maya, a highly anticipated addition to the larger Mayakoba resort area.

I had the pleasure of spending a couple days at the new property, taking in its ocean views, local culture and preserved wildlife. From the moment I arrived at the hotel, I was taken aback by the way the property seamlessly blends in with its natural surroundings. We drove in through forests of palms, mangroves, tropical flowers and the sounds of wildlife. When I arrived in the open-air lobby I noticed a large circular cutout in the ceiling and a circular pool in the floor, which I learned was designed to emulate a cenote, a geographical phenomenon found on the Yucatan Peninsula.

The Andaz Mayakoba property itself is expansive yet walkable, and there are golf carts available regularly to transport guests where they need to go. Regardless of where I was on the property during my stay, I enjoyed the feeling of being entirely immersed in nature, from the sounds of the local birds to the abundance of flora and fauna, and the green-blue lagoon that connects the Mayakoba resorts.

The guestrooms are a perfect representation of the local Mayan culture, which the hotel prides itself in preserving and celebrating. Natural materials of stone and wood were broken up by bright, colorful pieces of furniture and artwork, most handcrafted locally. Both the balcony and the glass rainfall shower overlooked the picturesque lagoon.

The hotel is home to four restaurants, all of which offer something unique, from upscale Latin American cuisine at Casa Amate to authentic Mexican cuisine at OllaTaco and OllaCeviche. Guests staying at Andaz Mayakoba can also take a lagoon cruise and visit the restaurants at the other resort properties.

The hotel has two pools, one located next to the lagoon and the other along the beach, both of which offer beautiful views and a serene atmosphere. I also had the opportunity to experience the hotel’s newly opened Naum Spa, where I enjoyed a massage, a hydrotherapy session and a personalized aromatherapy session.

Overall, Andaz Mayakoba is among the most unique hotels at which I’ve stayed, offering a truly authentic cultural experience, incredible food and breathtakingly beautiful natural surroundings.
