Reviews / Restaurant

The city of Sheffield is home to a strong Chinese population, with many students coming to study at one of two universities in town.

This means there are a number of Chinese businesses in the city, and the Orient Express restaurant is chief among them. It sits at one end of West Street, the city’s main nightlife area, and is a popular choice.

One reason for this is the huge portions, which are comfortably enough for two people to share. My plate of Singapore fried noodles was stuffed full of prawns, pork and peppers, so it’s not all starchy filler.

Another reason is the fact Chinese food doesn’t get better than this for the price. At just $10, the majority of the dishes fall into the bargain basement price range, but you wouldn’t think it thanks to the high-quality ingredients.

The décor isn’t fancy, but the food more than makes up for it. Another encouraging sign is the popularity of the restaurant with the Chinese community, and menus in Mandarin add to the sense this is a restaurant by Chinese people, for Chinese people.

Make a night of it with a bigger group or pop in for a quick bite to eat after an afternoon in town, you won’t be disappointed by the Orient Express. A meal for one with a beer came to $12.
