Reviews / Airline

A lot of people hate on Spirit Airlines, the budget carrier that offers lower base rate fares with the option to customize with add-ons like checked and overhead bags, early boarding and more.

All of these options come with additional fees levied at increasingly higher rates the further into the process you choose them; for example, you’ll pay a few bucks less for your checked bag if you pay for it at booking compared to at the airport check-in desk. That price goes up significantly if you wait to pay for it at the gate, and it can be sky high if you wait until boarding.

These aspects make Spirit unpopular, but the airline makes these tiers abundantly clear, with reminder emails, handy graphics, announcements and a useful chart at booking.

Further, Spirit’s system allows you to save money if you follow the simple instructions. It also means you’re only paying for services you use. The no-frills airline also eliminated things like free sodas and in-flight magazines, so things are pretty pared down; however, again, if you don’t need these things, you’re not being asked to pay for them.

Spirit keeps its prices low by reducing the amount of on-the-ground time for its planes, as well as other strategies, another welcome aspect of flying with them.
