I always make it a point to explore nearby ruins when traveling in Mexico and I found the ones outside of Mérida to be some of the best. The lack of crowds combined with the mesmerizing architecture made the Zona Arqueologica Uxmal one of the highlights of my trip.
You can explore the ruins on your own or opt for a guide, as I did, to help you learn more about the history of the site. I highly recommend a tour and, at roughly $10, it’s a great bargain.
The structures here practically crawl right out of the jungle and while you can’t climb on all the pyramid-like buildings, you can traverse a few of them. Be warned though different structures actually charge extra for you to explore, so be wary of what you’re walking into.
Unlike the nearby Chichen Itza, you’re free to climb the largest pyramid at Uxmal. Without the enormous crowds, this happens to be the more relaxing and immersive experience of the two. While some of the structures have been restored, a lot of the ruins remain untouched and in their truest forms. It’s a great testament to the ingenuity of the locals’ ancestors.
I highly recommend heading to Uxmal, as it’s such a quick trip from Mérida that there’s really no excuse not to check it out.
