There’s a lot to love about the Alberton Gorge area, just 30 miles west of Missoula, Mont. The deep gorge and the Clark Fork River slicing through are incredibly scenic, and make for an exciting day of rafting or floating.
If you need a base for exploration, your options are few and far between in the tiny town of Alberton. One of the only games in town is the River Edge Resort, which sports a restaurant, casino, small motel and campground for tents and RVs. The resort benefits from its perch above the scenic river, which you can gaze at from the bluff or walk down to for a swim on a hot day.
Apart from the view, the impressive Montana beer offerings at the restaurant and the sweet scene on live music nights, there’s little to love about this place as a lodging option. The motel rooms are bare bones and run down; the thin walls let in all noise from the neighbors, including snoring; light from outside streetlamps seeps in the crumbling blinds; the air conditioning unit was loud and disruptive, as were numerous passing trains across the river; and bugs dropped from the ceiling into the bed at several points throughout the night.
If you’re desperate to stay here, you’d do yourself a favor by bringing a tent or RV. At least that way, the accommodations are your own responsibility.
