Located on the side of Mount Naeba, the Fuji Rock Festival is one of the best rock festivals one can attend outside the United States. It’s also one of the largest music festivals in Japan, drawing more than 100,000 people to the cool weather of Niigata.

The event was originally conceived in 1997, though its first years were marred by bad weather and mismanagement before they relocated to the Naeba Ski Resort in Yuzawa. Veterans of the festival fondly remember the inaugural event when the Red Hot Chili Peppers played a legendary set despite getting struck by a typhoon and Anthony Kiedis having a broken arm. The band will be returning to headline this year’s final night July 24, along with Beck and Sigur Rós.

In addition to being the biggest festival of its kind, Fuji Rock also bills itself as “the cleanest festival in the world” with a particular emphasis on recycling. Even the paper towel rolls are made from recycled waste from the previous year. Solar power and biofuels help with a carbon offset, and there are numerous booths set up by NGOs to raise environmental awareness.

This year’s festival will take place July 22–24. Learn more at fujirock-eng.com.
