Rome’s famous Colosseum, built nearly 2,000 years ago for gladiator battles, will soon be home to a new archaeological park.
The Colosseum is Italy’s highest-grossing monument, bringing in around more than €44 million from sales of 6.4 million tickets in 2016 alone. The archaeological park, which will also include the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill and Domus Aurea, will increase visitor numbers by offering better services and streamlining management.
However, the plans didn’t come together without a political battle between rival Italian parties over how it should be run. The Council of State, Italy’s administrative court, ruled in favor of the Italian Culture Ministry’s plan to create the park.
Rome’s Mayor Virginia Raggi originally objected to the plans, saying they would be “harmful to the interests of Roma Capitale” by siphoning funds away from the capital. But the scheme to modernize Italy’s monuments is underway.
The archaeological park also includes the search for a new director of the Colosseum. So far there have been 82 applicants, 16 of whom are not Italian. The successful candidate will start in January 2018.
