Safety

Thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail can be a life-changing challenge, and thousands attempt the 2,190-mile, six-month journey each year. A little bit of precaution and good common sense can ensure your experience is safe, so you can worry about having a great time, instead of about the many dangers that can pop up unannounced on the trail.

In order to avoid a hazard created by your own lack of preparedness, be sure to plan ahead and do your research before embarking on such a challenge. It’s not for everyone, and it’s recommended if you haven’t attempted this kind of wilderness hiking and camping before, you take a week or even just a weekend trip to the Appalachian Trail as a test run. Keep in mind the amount of money you’ll need for the trip (costs include equipment, equipment repair, food, supplies, laundry and the occasional night in a cabin or meal at a restaurant). Talk to individuals who have completed a thru-hike to learn about their experiences and heed their advice. Decide where and when you’ll begin your hike. It’s recommended beginners start at Springer Mountain in Georgia in March, and make their way to Maine over the summer.

Once on the trail, it’s important to maintain human connection, particularly if you don’t have a group of hiking partners with you. Even if you’re with another individual, hiking in pairs isn’t always enough protection. Schedule check-in times with someone back home, with instructions on what to do if you fail to check-in. Leave a detailed itinerary with that person and notify them of any changes to the itinerary that occur during the trip, so they always know where you are or where you’re supposed to be.

Don’t make yourself a target. Leave valuables at home, including basic jewelry. Keep your money on your person at all times, preferably in a safe place. Keep anything valuable or likely to be stolen out of sight as much as possible. If you’re alone or in a pair, avoid telling others too many details about your plans. Even if the person you’re talking to does not seem like a threat, you never know who’s listening.

Finally, use your best judgment. If something doesn’t seem right or if someone seems suspicious, leave the situation immediately.
