The city of Nimes has a long history and plenty of surviving sights that attest to it. Here are some of the best ones.
Les Jardins de la Fontaine is a hilly park with a set of fountains at the bottom, rising up to the famous Tour Magne at the top. The latter was first built in 15 BC, and you can still climb it today. It’s worth the walk to get a great view out over the city.
La Maison Carrée is a Roman temple miraculously preserved. It now houses a cinema showing a film about the history of the city, but it’s worth a look even from the outside. Just across the street is Le Carré d’Art, a modern piece of architecture housing a collection of contemporary art, as well as the Nimes city library.
Perhaps the most iconic sight in the city is the Arena. This huge Roman edifice was built in 70 AD to host gladiator fights and other spectacles, surviving years of upheaval to stand tall to this day. You might find bullfighting events there today, but otherwise you can take a wander around most days of the year.
Other sights include Place Gabriel Péri, home to the 19th-century Saint Baudile church and the Place d’Assas, with its collection of stylish bars and restaurants
