Trends / Food & Drink

Celebrate Earth Day April 22 by signing up for a CSA. Short for Community Supported Agriculture, CSAs are a popular way for consumers to support local farms and farmers, while buying the best local, seasonal ingredients.

Each CSA operates on the same basic principal: The member pays for a seasonal share of the local farmer’s product in exchange for a mixed variety of seasonal produce and goods. CSAs benefit both the farmer’s financial stability and the consumer’s health.

The exact process of types of produce available, delivery and other logistics varies by organization. Some farmers will allow shareholders to pick and choose specific items like herbs, flowers, dairy or eggs. Timing varies greatly, with some seasonal or yearly options available. Pick-ups tend to be weekly or sometimes biweekly. Depending on the farm location, shareholders can either pick up their produce directly at the farm or at another designated pick-up location in town.

Do a local search to find the CSA options available in your community. Organizations like Local Harvest offer an extensive directory of the best CSAs and farmers markets near you. Be sure to select the option that serves you and your needs best.
