Once the festive season is over, those in the Northern Hemisphere are left to deal with the January blues and arguably the worst weather of the year.
A growing number of millennials are skipping town during the dark months of January and February, taking off to warmer climes to work, volunteer or otherwise expand their horizons. There are numerous ways to escape the worst of winter without breaking the bank.
The first possibility is to arrange a placement on a site such as Workaway, HelpX or HelpStay, all of which pair volunteers with placements that offer food and board in exchange for your time. Each of the sites offer volunteer opportunities all over the world, and you can search by required skills.
Another option is to sign up for a house-sitting gig. With so many expatriates splitting their time between home and a property abroad, there are plenty of opportunities to be found on sites such as HouseCarers, MindMyHouse and TrustedHousesitters. By eliminating one of the major living costs, you can end up living in a great property while only keeping yourself in food and drink.
Alternatively if you want to travel around, scour the web for a cheap flight to India, Vietnam or Cambodia. The cost of living in these countries is so low you can feasibly live for the same price as a monthly travel pass in London. If you needed any more encouragement to make the leap and get away from home, the grey skies of January could push you over the edge!
