Winter is coming quickly, and that isn’t a bad thing for ice-climbing enthusiasts who love to experience new destinations. Cody Yellowstone prepares to host the second annual Wyoming Ice Festival, Jan. 4–7, 2024, where it will welcome ice climbers of all skills and experience levels to discover the beauty of Yellowstone at its winter finest.
Set amid a backdrop of frozen waterfalls, ice-capped mountains and miles of forest dusted in snow, the Wyoming Ice Festival is a four-day experience of 2:1, 4:1, 6:1, and 8:1 clinics designed to provide climbers from beginners to experts the opportunity to work with seasoned and trained professionals and like-minded individuals in a stunning landscape.
The festival attracts climbers and alpinists from around the world to experience different climbs in Yellowstone, one of the most popular national parks in the country. Clinics range from beginner classes like Intro to Ice to expert-level clinics like Advanced Multi-Pitch and Light and Fast Alpinism.
Clinics cover important safety basics like ice assessment, terrain awareness, gear safety, climbing movement and energy preservation. Registration is $15 and gives you access to all evening ice festival events at the Cody Cattle Co. Note that each clinic involves an additional fee (clinic pricing ranges from $225 to $695).
While in town for the Ice Festival, exploring the rest of the wonderful winter activities Cody has to offer is a must. The area is ideal for cross-country skiing, night skiing, snowmobiling and even ice skating, both indoors and outdoors. One of the most popular places for ice skating is in nearby Powell at the Homesteader Park Outdoor Rink, where you can rent a pair of skates and enjoy the crisp night air, night lighting, concessions and all-important warming hut.
