As summer approaches, ticket sales have begun for some of the nation’s top music festivals. Set aside a portion of your travel budget for the lively jazz festivals listed below, and spend a few extra days exploring the host city!
Telluride Jazz Festival
Escape the August heat by jetting off to Colorado for a weekend of jazz music among the Rocky Mountains. The normally vivacious atmosphere of a jazz fest is subdued in this picturesque setting that take places during the first weekend of August. In operation since 1977, the festival also allows attendees to take part in outdoor activities like paddle boarding, hiking and fishing.
Newport Jazz Festival
Dust off your lobster bib and boat shoes for this jazz festival in Newport, R.I. Since its inception in 1954, the festival has taken breaks and changed locations, but is still considered the oldest in the nation. Four stages rotate performers, with an introductory Friday night concert at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. This year’s opening acts are Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue along with Rhiannon Gibbons.
Monterey Jazz Festival
As summer winds down, head to Northern California just after Labor Day for the world’s longest-running jazz festival. More than 500 acts perform at the Monterey Jazz Festival, where a nearby parking lot lets campers pass the weekend in their own RVs.
