On March 20, a total solar eclipse will take place at the Faroe Islands and Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean midway between Norwayand the North Pole. The unique natural event can only be seen from Svalbard and the shores of the Faroe Islands.
In a total solar eclipse, the sun is completely aligned with the moon, blocking all light and resulting in a few minutes of complete darkness. On the mainland in Norway, only about 90 percent of the sun will be blocked. This total eclipse is expected to last less than three minutes.
For eye safety, it is recommended to not stare directly at the sun until the total eclipse occurs. Goggles or special eclipse glasses are ideal for experiencing this phenomenon. Temperatures will be below freezing, so warm attire is necessary.
Following the eclipse, the remainder of the day in the Faroe Islands will be spent with a variety of cultural and musical events, tours, food and activities.
The worldwide interest is huge and many hotels and guesthouse arrangements are sold out. Check out the websites for travel tips.
