Founded in 2012, this academy was created to give students a medium in which to express their creativity and hone their swimming. The class is taught in the water — from rivers to pools to oceans depending on the location — and caters to all ages and genders. Students wriggle their way into their tails, made of elastic fabric and begin learning the art of mermaiding. Classes range in price from PHP 1,500 (about $33) to PHP 3,500 (about $78), and are taught in Boracay, Cebu and four different locations in Manila. While the course is most commonly taught in groups, private sessions are available for travelers looking for a one-on-one experience.

In addition to the standard mermaid courses, the Mermaid Academy also offers courses in mermaid snorkeling, scuba diving and fitness, as well as “The Modern Mermaid,” which involves discovering the ocean depths with a water scooter.
