The Best Places to Lock Your Bike

When your bike is your primary means of transportation, you face a unique parking dilemma. Although parking is usually free, that doesn’t mean it’s easy.

While some businesses, restaurants and metro stops have bike racks, many places leave bike commuters to fend for themselves. Some cities prohibit locking bikes to benches, trees or signposts so be sure to know the regulations before parking.

Park nearby. This simple trick can help you keep an eye on your bike. Some restaurants will even allow you to temporarily keep your bike in their storage area while you eat — always ask for bicycle accommodations, you may be surprised.

Be visible. Whenever possible, park in a well-lit area people pass. This can deter opportunistic thieves and also be safer for you to return to your bike.

Lock to something secure. This almost goes without saying, but locking your bike to a rickety signpost or outdoor table is not your best bet. Parking meters are generally a safe place but not when you’re using a chain or cable lock that thieves can slide over the top of the meter.

Lock well. A bike is only as safe as it’s lock. U-locks and chains are generally a safe bet but be sure to lock your entire bike frame, wheels and all. Securely locking your back tire won’t do any good. Consider using multiple locks to secure your bike better.
