Trends / Unique Itineraries & Tours

Electric-assist bikes (or e-bikes) have been prevalent in Europe for approximately the past 10 years, and are only recently gaining traction in major U.S. tourist destinations. Americans finally caught on to the allure and utility of these modes of transportation, and see the benefits of offering a unique way to get around for riders of all ages and athletic abilities.

An e-bike is essentially a regular road bike equipped with a motor powered by a battery. Once a rider begins to pedal, the bike will move forward. Rather than relying on individual personal strength and gears to move riders forward, e-bike batteries assist riders as they move through a variety of terrains.

Despite criticism from hardcore cyclists, e-bikes are making their way into the U.S. travel circuit. Although originally targeted to older travelers with possible mobility issues, the bikes have been a hit with younger riders intrigued by the technological aspects.

E-bikes aren’t just for travelers: Last year, sales of e-bikes in Europe reached 2.3 million bikes, and e-bike sharing programs launched in San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
