South America is such a huge continent, bus journeys can become mammoth undertakings, but they need not be uncomfortable.

Most countries in South America boast well-developed bus services which enable budget-conscious travelers to save money compared to flying. Journeys of 24 hours are not unheard of, and some even tell of colossal 40-hour odysseys that test the limits of the human spirit. While it isn’t recommended to spend 40 hours on any mode of transport, these tips will make your bus journeys more bearable.

Buy your tickets early to avoid sitting at the back of the bus, near the bathroom. Arrive 30 minutes before departure to grab your rightful place and avoid any awkward exchanges with people that try to swap their bad seat for your good one.

Although you may have boarded the bus in heat, you can count on the air conditioning bringing the ambient temperature down to a chill as soon as you hit the road. If you boarded in sandals and a vest, make sure you’ve got some socks and a hoody in your carry-on bag. A blanket or sleeping bag is also advisable for overnight buses.
Light sleepers may want to consider bringing ear plugs to block out the loud movies which are often played throughout the journey. Consider bringing a number of emergency snacks, even if the ticket seller promised there would be food provided. If it is indeed provided, it is unlikely to satisfy you. Those with special dietary requirements should definitely stock up before the journey begins, because South America is not generally known for its appreciation of vegetarianism, let alone those who suffer food intolerances.

Most buses do offer bathroom facilities, but it is advised to bring your own toilet paper.
