Couchsurfing is one of the best ways to travel, see the world and meet new people while saving money, though there are several things to keep in mind when it comes to courtesy and safety. Here are some tips to follow if couchsurfing is part of your travel plan.
Give your host as much notice as possible — it just makes sense. When you stay in a stranger’s home, a surprise arrival is not the way to go. The more time you give your host, the more time they have to prepare your accommodations.
Pay back the kindness — hosts are often expected to provide accommodations for free, so it is recommended you give a small gift in return. A nice bottle of wine, box of chocolates, fresh flowers or a nice thank-you note go a long way.
Replace anything consumed — again, since you’re likely staying for free, it’s courteous to replace anything consumed, whether it’s food, drinks or toiletries. These are small prices to pay when you’re avoiding expensive accommodations.
Keep your host’s schedule in mind — often a host will provide a key assuming you will come and go as you please. However, giving your host a general idea of your itinerary is a polite courtesy your host will surely appreciate, especially if you plan on coming in late.
Leave good feedback — there is an element of credibility on both sides of the couchsurfing community. If you have a good experience, make sure to recommend them, and if you’re a courteous guest, you’ll hopefully receive similar feedback from your host.
