Airports can be overwhelming, stressful and exhausting. Several things beyond our control can go wrong. Here are some tips for things you can do to make the airport process a little smoother.
Get TSA PreCheck or Global Entry
While the process to get PreCheck or Global Entry is time consuming and slightly inconvenient, it’s well worth your time to avoid waiting in long security lines and to board faster.
Figure Out Parking Before You Arrive
Airport parking is one of the most frustrating parts of flying and can be expensive. Save yourself a little bit of time and money by planning in advance, whether that means purchasing a spot online or using an app. The Airport Parking Reservations app allows you to book a spot in advance at a 70 percent discount. Several airports also have their own apps that help you find parking before you arrive.
Be Prepared for Security
If you don’t have PreCheck and you know you’ll have to go through security, be prepared. The rules don’t change: You’ll have to remove your laptop and other large electronics and put them in their own bin; if you have liquids, make sure they’re in a Ziploc bag and can be easily pulled out; you’ll have to remove your heavier sweaters or sweatshirts; and you’ll have to take your shoes off, so don’t fight it in the off chance someone lets you keep them on. It’s also helpful to bring an extra Ziploc bag for your keys, jewelry, change and any other smaller items you may keep in your pockets, to avoid fumbling to grab them all on the other side of security.
Take a Screenshot of your Mobile Boarding Pass
Mobile boarding passes are great, but taking a screenshot of the pass might save you time and trouble in the chance an app signs you out, crashes or you don’t have any service.
Be in the Know
When you book airfare, you usually have the option of inputting your cellphone number to receive alerts — do this. At the very least, regularly check your flight status online as you work your way through security and while you’re waiting to board. You can also download the GateGuru app, which tracks departures and arrival times; estimates TSA checkpoint wait times; and features terminal maps with ATMs, bathrooms, lounges, shops and restaurants. Set up push notifications for real-time updates to your itinerary.
Don’t Wait in the Rebooking Line
Unless you know you’ll be one of the first in line, avoid the rebooking line if your flight gets canceled. Have your airline’s customer service number in your phone before you get to the airport and get on the phone with them immediately.
Dress Nicely
We’re not talking about a three-piece suit, but dressing a little nicer than usual sometimes has its benefits when it comes to getting free upgrades.
