Fort Peck Lake

Fort Peck Lake is the best for those really trying to leave civilization. It’s a great place to take a group of friends for a spiritual weekend of reconnecting to nature. It is a remote destination where the wildlife will become your best friends. Campers will see birds, buffalo, elk and more wild animals. The lake is a great place to fish; you might be able to catch dinner there.

Makoshiki

Makoshika is a popular campsite in Montana. Spots can fill up quickly so book ahead of time to secure a spot. The best part is the views of the sky at night. Makoshika is a state park as well, so there are great trails to use during the day to explore the area.

Holland Lake

If you’re looking for a place near Bigfork, choose to spend a week at the incredible Holland Lake. The views of this lake look like they came straight out of a book. It’s a magical site with the expansive lake and the ice-capped mountains in the background. You can only camp here May–September, so book in advance. Also, if you can, try to book a spot that includes a view of the 40-foot waterfall, Holland Falls.

Thompson Falls State Park

Thompson Falls State Park is shaded, quiet area surrounded by tall trees. The campground is on Clark Fork River and near the town of Thompson Falls. You can walk along the river and do some fishing in this area.

Garnet Mountain Fire Lookout

Lastly, check out Garnet Mountain Fire Lookout, which sits on the apex of Garnet Mountain south of Bozeman. It’s a fire lookout for rent but there’s not electricity or water so this counts as camping.
