Montana River Guides operates out of scenic Alberton, Mont., 30 miles west of Missoula. The company delivers top-notch, friendly service and plenty of thrills on their rafting, stand-up paddle boarding and float trips down the Clark Fork River.
Montana River Guides is also one of the only commercial outfits in the world to provide what’s called “riverboarding” trips, where you’re basically clinging to a beefed-up boogie board and being jettisoned down the same rapids the big whitewater rafts cruise through. It’s an absolute thrill, one that puts you up close and personal with the river for a unique experience. Our trip lasted about 2.5 hours and involved several class 2 and 3 rapids, big enough to offer a heart-pumping adventure without unreasonable dangers. We were led by friendly, experienced and capable guide Paul, who taught us the ropes and guided us safely through big waves.
Overall, any way you choose to go down the river is a great opportunity to view wildlife like bald eagles, as well as take in the stunning scenery of this slice of Montana. The Alberton Gorge’s steep, pink cliffs as well as the muscular mountains surrounding the river are a pretty perfect place to spend half a day.
