As you’ve probably seen in the news, overtourism is a large problem for many destinations, resulting in damaged environments and cultural attractions and over-crowding. Here are five of those destinations (according to a study comparing annual tourist numbers to local populations) and where you can go instead to enjoy a similar but more responsible experience.
Croatia
Just a short distance from Croatia is the beautiful country of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Filled with natural attractions, historic towns, cultural tradition and friendly locals, you’ll wonder why you’ve never visited before. One of the can’t-miss spots? The UNESCO-recognized Stari Most Bridge, the most popular landmark in the country and one of the most photographed.
Iceland
Yes, Iceland, the country everyone has been flocking to for years, is now overcrowded, particularly Reykjavik. Instead of heading there this season, be unique and go just a little further to the East. The Faroe Islands are a beautiful hidden gem with charming old towns, gorgeous hiking trails and breathtaking shorelines that compete with any snapshot of Iceland.
Hungary
While probably not your first guess, Budapest is becoming increasingly popular for its “cool” European status and affordability. However, you can still enjoy travel on a budget to the neighboring Austria. The sophisticated cities and musical history are well worth a stop. To enjoy high-style travel for a budget-friendly price, start planning earlier rather than later.
Denmark
Skip Denmark, but stay nearby in Norway. Cruise the fjords, enjoy a scenic train ride through the magnificent countryside, take in some Viking history or even glimpse the Northern Lights. However you spend your time in Norway, you’ll be glad you did.
France
Yes, France is a spectacular destination, but if you’ve been there once, skip it this time around and stick a little closer to home. Old Montreal offers a European atmosphere, with the added benefit of affordability and less of a culture shock. Historic architecture, a great food scene and lots of French make this a great option for Francophiles.
