Nearly every city around the country has their own local specialty, but few are as old and long lasting as Wisconsin’s frozen custard. Although it may seem similar to ice cream, locals insist on its difference. Unlike its more popular relative, custard is made with not only milk and sugar, but also egg yolk. For years, many restaurants and stands in the region have competed for the title of Best Frozen Custard. Below are a few of the standouts.
Kopp’s Frozen Custard Stand
Kopp’s is known throughout the greater Milwaukee area as the premiere frozen custard destination. Founded in 1950, this landmark not only serves frozen treats, but also their famous “jumbo” burgers. Check out the wooded location in Greenfield, the pyramid design in Brookfield or the ceramic white-cow-lined spot in Bayshore.
Golden Gyros
Despite the misleading name, this Greek woodshed of a restaurant is most famous for their cold custard. If not for its vertical sign, you might mistake this small building for one of the many residential homes in the surrounding neighborhood.
Oscar’s Frozen Custard and Burgers
Built inside an old barn, this custard stop pairs a local rustic feel with a modern chic interior. Unlike most custard locations, Oscar’s offers a full menu of other tasty treats including not only burgers, but also fried chicken, fish, sandwiches, salads and malts.
Leon’s Frozen Custard
Those visiting the south side of Milwaukee can take a chance with Leon’s Frozen Custard. This glowing neon custard haven can be seen from blocks away, and serves some of Wisconsin’s best.
Gilles Frozen Custard
Gilles is known as perhaps the oldest frozen custard restaurant in America, dating back to 1938. Patrons can drive up under the famous blue awning and turn their lights on to receive personal, drive-thru service. Those wishing to eat some of this custard once they leave the area can pick up a pint at grocery store locations throughout the Midwest.
