If you are planning a trip to Dublin you’ve probably been told you have to try some locally brewed Guinness. However, once you’ve ticket that off the bucket list, there are plenty of other Irish stouts worthy of your time.
Murphy’s Irish Stout
If you like stout but can’t deal with the clout of Guinness, you might get along better with Murphy’s. It’s lighter and sweeter than its more famous rival, and slips down easier.
O’Hara’s Celtic Stout
This stout is made by the Carlow Brewery in the Barrow Valley, according to the traditional recipe. That means there are only hops, barley, yeast and water in every pint, compared to the long and complicated ingredient list of most mass-market beers.
Porterhouse Oyster Stout
This oyster stout is actually made with the bivalve, and carries a subtle hint of its flavors. As such it’s not suitable for vegetarians, but it’s delicious for everyone else. Try it at the Porterhouse Brewing Company pub in Dublin.
Beamish Stout
The last member of Ireland’s Big Three (Guinness, Murphy’s and Beamish) is sometimes compared to Guinness. However, connoisseurs will appreciate its slightly spicy bite that adds interest to a generally chocolatey body.
Black Rock Irish Stout
Made by the craft brewers at the Dungarvan Brewing Company, this light stout has vanilla and aniseed notes. Bottles contain yeast sediment so you should be careful when pouring it out!
