Caribbean Islands are not generally the choice of most budget travelers outside of package deals to the Bahamas or Jamaica. But, live a little and then come back with a story by traveling to an island most can’t find on a map.

The Corn Islands, Nicaragua
Off the coast of Nicaragua and a mere 90-minute hop from the capital city of Managua, lie Big Corn and Little Corn Island. There are few islands in the world with an infrastructure with such a minimal population. Throw in the pirate history and you will have a memorable trip.

Anguilla
Mere minutes by boats that connect Anguilla to St. Martin lies a mysterious land of luxury. It’s also home to some of the friendliest locals, the best jerk pork/chicken outside of Jamaica and Uncle Ernie’s lobster shack on the other side of the coin and island.

San Andrés, Colombia
This island gets you Columbia and the Caribbean. Nearly any airport you fly into in Columbia blesses you with a fantastic city. So spend a day or two in Cartagena or Medellin among others and enjoy the flight to the dive/snorkel mecca that is San Andrés. Nearly 500 miles off the northwest coast, getting there is half the fun and is also accessible by a “found” boat for the truly adventurous.

Martinique
Speak French; have a few euros lying around? Fantastic rum and volcanoes also wait for you in this part of the Lesser Antilles.

Haiti
Let’s face it: Haiti gets a bad rap. While it is impoverished and a bit dangerous, it is also the home of voodoo, has a vibrant nightlife and plenty of opportunities for volunteering.
