Top 5 / North America

With St. Patrick’s Day upon us, now is the time to decide where you’re going to drink the night away on this raucous holiday. Cities across America celebrate the day with parties galore, but here are a few who do it best.

Chicago

What’s not to love about a city that turns its biggest river green to celebrate the day? There are plenty of parties to be found in the Windy City, as well as one of the nation’s biggest parades.

Boston

Boston has the highest percent of Irish folks living in city limits, so you’d best believe they’re going to celebrate the holiday right. In addition to the third-largest parade in the country, they also have a six-day concert series featuring the Irish punk band Dropkick Murhpys.

New York City

New York City is incapable of doing anything in small doses, which is why they hold the biggest St Paddy’s Day parade around. If you’re not up for standing in the cold streets, though, you can always check out Irish Art Center’s yearly Irish Open Day to partake in traditional Irish dancing and Gaelic football.

New Orleans

Mardi Gras isn’t the only New Orleans holiday where people get stuff thrown at them. During the annual Irish Channel Parade participants are encouraged to toss items found in traditional Irish stew at the crowd. No one will judge you if you throw it back.

Pittsburgh

Like Boston, this city also has a remarkably high percentage of Irish Americans. Roughly 20,000 of them join in the parade each year. Pittsburgh is also a drinking town, so you know the bars stay open late on this day.
