The capital of Ukraine isn’t exactly thought of as the most exciting tourist destination in the world, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of fun things to see and do. The next time you’re in Kiev, here are a few things you shouldn’t miss.
Kiev Pechersk Lavra
Monks who chose to settle into a cave system in the hills developed the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, or Caves Monastery, in 1051. When there was no room left to expand, they began to build the monastery overtop of the caves. Today it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site with beautiful cathedrals and underground passages to explore.
Ukranian National Chernobyl Musuem
This wonderful museum is charged with documenting, preserving and conveying the history of the Chernobyl disaster. It combines history with scientific discoveries to showcase the dangerous path man walks down when it creates weapons of destruction and aims to enlighten humanity about the need for compassion.
Andriyivsky Descent
The Adriyivsky Descent is actually a small, downhill street that used to connect Upper Kiev with the commercial district of Podil. It’s now home to some of the city’s best landmarks like St. Andrew’s Church and the Castle of Richard the Lionheart. Don’t miss the spectacular art bazaar held here!
St. Sophia Cathedral
In a city known for it spiraling cathedrals, it’s difficult to pick out just one that stands above the rest, but St. Sophia is definitely a contender. The picturesque green and white landmark looks like something you’d expect to see in Disneyland. The interior houses paintings more than 1,000 years old.
The Sculpture’s Alley
If you’re looking for a place that’ll put a smile on your face, look no further than Sculpture’s Alley. This quirky little street was designed in the 1980s by architect Avraam Miletsky and holds numerous funky sculptures sure to make you laugh. It’s fondly referred to as the “kindest place in the capital.”
