Wine from Portugal generally comes from the Vinho Verde region in the north or the Douro valley. Vinho Verde tends to be easy to drink, with a lower alcohol percentage than most wines, and the Douro is best known for hearty reds.
Port, a kind of fortified wine, hails from the area around the city of Porto. You might not drink it much normally, but try some of the local stuff and that may well change.
Medronho is another traditional tipple, made from Medronho berries. It’s a kind of spirit normally as strong as vodka or whiskey, and many people make their own moonshine versions at home.
Another good digestif is Moscatel, a kind of dessert wine that is generally sweet and easy on the palate, while Ginja is a sort of sour liqueur that consists of cherries, aguardiente and sugar.
The biggest beer brands that you are likely to see are Super Bock and Sagres, both lagers. The former is more popular in the north of the country, where it is made, and the latter has more fans in the south.
If you like infusions, try Beirão. It’s made with 13 different seeds and herbs, and you will see it in most bars and cafés.
