Although DNA tests have been around to help solve crimes since the 1980s, it wasn’t until 2017 when at-home DNA kits exploded into the mainstream consumer marketplace. It’s no surprise travelers focused on experiential trips are now looking at DNA tests as a way to rediscover their ancestral heritage. Technology makes it easier than ever to get a comprehensive view of our DNA, as well as book a ticket to get to our roots and historic homelands. Rondel Holder learned his ethnicity could be traced to the African countries of Togo and Benin and immediately booked a ticket to connect with his historic roots and meet the locals. Holder reports his experience ultimately led to a journey of self-discovery.

Others are also traveling to find long-lost relatives through at-home DNA tests. Simply sending a completed kit to Ancestry DNA results in discovering long-lost cousins and relatives, followed by reunion trips. Ancestry reports DNA travelers getting in touch with relatives in the old country who warmly welcome them with fanfare. The growing DNA travel trend has also inspired organized heritage tours around the world, like Ireland, Cuba, England and beyond. Travelers get a chance to see the towns they were from, and possibly even their historic family home.

Before you book your next trip, take a DNA test to reveal a deeper look at your history, relatives, personality traits, health profile and preferences to help build an unbelievably personalized travel itinerary.
