Down in South Africa, just north of the buzzing metropolis of Johannesburg, waits an adventure that will impress even the most seasoned of adrenaline junkies: SCAD Diving. At the famous Orlando Towers, those brave enough will have the chance to use a SCAD, or “suspended catch air device.” This involves bungee jumping without the bungee cord, and freefalling from a height of 70 meters into an enormous net.
If that isn’t terrifying enough, visitors should be aware that those falling must do so while facing backwards, unaware of when they are going to hit the net. Jumpmasters will even encourage their guests to shout “SCAD!” as they plunge downward.
Each platform is located inside one of the two refurbished cooling towers, both decorated with colorful murals that were designed by local artists. This environment creates an amazing sound amplifier, echoing the shrieks and screams of each guest. While people of all experience levels and ages can try out SCAD diving, guests must be between 35 kilograms (77 pounds) and 110 kilograms (242 pounds) to safely participate.
The Orlando Towers are not simply for SCAD Diving; however, they also offer traditional bungee jumping as well as power swinging, base jumping and rap jumping.
