Trends / Adventure

Urban dwellers interested in rock climbing face the conundrum of having no place to give it a try or to practice. Instead of wasting money on an expedition you might not even enjoy, consider a trip to your local climbing gym to get a feel for what you’re getting into.

People have been climbing mountains for centuries, but it wasn’t until recently indoor climbing became a thing. The first gym was established in 1987 for Seattle climbers who were kept inside by inclement weather. The new venue offered climbers a chance to practice their skills on a regular basis, independent of weather, lighting and expertise. By operating in a controlled environment, these gyms were also a safer alternative to the outdoors, inviting more people than ever into the world of rock climbing.

Like the outdoors, indoor climbing requires the use of proper climbing equipment like harnesses, climbing ropes, belay devices and possibly climbing shoes. Most gyms also utilize colored routes marked by ropes or tape to signify various levels of difficulty. Don’t worry if you’re a beginner and nervous about your first attempt. The increasing popularity of the sport allowed climbing enthusiasts to live anywhere in the world, so your gym will have someone who can help you out.
