The City of Lights is about to transform into the City of Music with the opening of two new music venues.
La Seine Musicale is located on an island (L’Île Seguin) in the middle of the Seine River, just west of Paris city proper. The former home of a Renault auto factory underwent a complete transformation to house two stunning new performance spaces. For a cool $170 million, architects Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines focused on turning over the island to create a creative space while still honoring the island’s history by incorporating industrial aspects to the design.
The Grande Seine performance hall will seat 6,000 guests for musicals, concerts and ballets, and a separate auditorium will serve as residence for the Insula Orchestra. Performers on the agenda for the debut year include Bob Dylan, Herbie Hancock and a musical performance of West Side Story.
Another goal of the two architects was to make performing arts available to the general public, not just ticket holders. A large media screen was constructed and will display various performances to the masses, with a field of vision of nearly two miles.
A massive sail rises over the building, appearing as a ship’s sail as it floats down the Seine, and a rooftop garden provides a pleasant outdoor space for visitors with views of the Eiffel Tower in the distance.
