Under $100 / Europe

Eastern Europe garnered a reputation for unique yet stunning architecture; hearty and meaty meals; and budget-friendly prices for travelers. In particular, the tiny capital of Slovakia is no exception. Although a major European capital, the city is more of a charming European town on the edge of the Danube River.

Begin your jaunt through Bratislava with coffee from Stur Café, followed by a stroll through the cobblestone streets of the Old Town area. Admire the subdued yet colorful two- to three-story buildings, and stop by St. Michael’s Tower for a bit of free history.

Around lunch time, pop into any local restaurant for a heaping serving of dumplings and soup, ranging from $3 to $7. Fully satiated, head to Bratislava Castle for expansive views of the city and Danube below. Pay the entrance fee of €7 (approximately $7.65) to explore the castle grounds and step inside the Slovak Museum of History.

As night falls, make a point to visit what has become known as the UFO Tower, which you will recognize immediately upon entering Bratislava. After a $7 ride to the top, enjoy a restaurant, bar and nighttime views of the city below. The drinks and food are a bit on the expensive side for such a small city, but after scrimping during the day, treat yourself with a classic cocktail.
