Andalusia´s second most popular destination (after Seville) boasts multiple UNESCO World Heritage sites, views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and southern Spanish hospitality. Situated in a region of Spain that still honors siestas and free tapas with a drink purchase, it´s easy to relax on a dime in Granada.
It´s almost unthinkable to travel to Granada and miss the stunning Alhambra. The compound encompasses a fortress, castle, gardens and religious monument, all of which are centuries old yet still immaculately preserved. To visit the general grounds during the day, the rate is €14 (about $15). Visit at night for a discounted rate (€8, or around $9) and see the palace in a different light, along with views over the entire city of Granada. A visit to the Generalife gardens costs an additional €7 euros (or around $8).
After a half-day of history, head to the city itself and treat yourself to a refreshing glass of sangria. With this beverage, your server will present you with a tapa of his choosing. Ranging from paella to croquetas to other Spanish delights, the sizeable snack will sustain you as you explore the city streets.
A walk through the former Romani neighborhood of Albacin exposes you to some of the area´s most unique history, capped off with one of the best views of Granada from the peak of the Mirador de San Nicolas.
Scouring the newspapers a day before your arrival will clue you into the museums and exhibits that offer free entry. Most of them require no entry fee, including the towering Granada Cathedral.
For a dinner that won´t break your travel budget, eat local. Case and point: El Pescaito de Carmela where a full plate of paella costs €11, and the fried fish dishes, like a plate of calamares, start at €8.50.
