Under $100: Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City, Saigon, no matter what you call this gem of a city you’re sure to fall in love after spending a few hours here. It’s both charming and beautiful while not being quite as chaotic as some of its neighbors.

Start your morning with a leisurely stroll through Tao Dan Park and watch the locals gather around to catch up with one another and sip tea or coffee. There’s sure to be a Vietnamese vendor offering iced coffee on a bike along the way. Grab yourself a treat for $2. For breakfast, make your way to nearby Ampm Restaurant & Café for a quick and cozy bite for less than $10.

Next, make your way a little outside of the city to Cu Chi Tunnel before it gets too hot. The tunnel was built as a hiding place and refuge for those caught in the middle of war. You can even crawl on your knees through it to get the real feel. Transportation, a tour guide and the entrance fee will cost between $10 and $15 depending on your negotiating skills.

For lunch, you have to try Bun Chả 145 Bui Viện. The soup and tapas menu here is Vietnamese food at its best, so don’t be surprised to wait 30 minutes for a table. Expect to drop $15 for a meal.

After you’ve eaten is the perfect time to check out Cho Ben Thanh Market in District 1. If you go on an empty stomach, you’ll be broke by the time you leave. This street market is full of delicious, homegrown Vietnamese food and souvenirs. Have some cash on hand, but try not to drop more than $30.

For dinner, head to Baba’s Kitchen. Sure, it’s Indian food in Vietnam, but you’ll be happy to trade authenticity for a taste of the jeera rice. It’s pricey, so be prepared to spend between $20 and $30 for dinner.
