Under $100 / North America

If you have ever wanted to visit Switzerland without having to leave the continental United States, you are in luck. New Glarus, Wisconsin, otherwise known as little Switzerland, is exactly the location of your semi-staycation dreams.

In the mid-19th century, a large number of Swiss immigrants settled in this southeastern Wisconsin town. And, even today, it retains much of the Old World charm with which it was founded. The name Glarus is an homage to the eastern Swiss province from which many of its original founders hailed.

Start your day with a gipfel, or croissant, at the New Glarus Bakery; a half dozen costs about $16. The town is full of fests so definitely be prepared to run into one, especially if you are traveling September–December. If you visit during a quieter time, wander the charming streets and take in the Chalet of the Golden Fleece. This house museum was once home to Edwin Barlow, who built the structure in the style of a Swiss chalet in 1937. There are many Swiss artifacts here, such as coins, needlework, wood carvings and a doll collection. Ticket for adults are $8.

For lunch, try some local farm to table at Cow and Quince; this restaurant’s menu changes based on local food availability, but it is known for its freshness and the lightness, a good counterpoint to butter croissants, beer and Swiss main courses. A light lunch will cost about $25.

After lunch, visit the New Glarus Brewery. The brewery makes six beers available year-round, as well as seasonal options. Check out its brew calendar for details. There are self-guided tours and you can visit Monday–Sunday, but if you would like a hard hat tour, these cost $30 and you need to book ahead because they only take place Fridays 1 p.m.–4 p.m.

For dinner, try traditional Swiss food at the Glarner Stube. It is a welcoming place serving up Swiss meatballs and red cabbage ($40). Aufwiederschauen!
