Nestled at the center of Spain’s Costa del Sol, the southern city of Málaga has built a name for itself in terms of modern tourism with a dash of old-world charm. Remnants of Moorish rule still remain in Picasso’s birthplace where art and architecture coalesce to make one beautiful city. Whether travelers are in search of a history lesson or a relaxing few days on the beach, Málaga offers both for any budget.
Resting high above the city is the fortress of Alcazaba. Dating to the 11th century, marvel in the Moorish architecture for an entry fee of less than $5, or visit for free on Sundays. A bit of a hike leads you to the top, but the views of the city and Alboran Sea below are worth the climb.
In the same vein of arduous climbs met with spectacular views, walk the steep path to the Castillo de Gibralfaro, stopping for photo opportunities along the way. Entry to the castle is also free on Sundays.
Back down in the center of town, make a point to admire Málaga’s cathedral. A beauty from the outside, the interior of the church wows visitors with intricate design and awe-inspiring architecture. Visit for a suggested admission of $5.
Rest your legs at a cozy café in Plaza de la Constitucion where a central fountain and street performers add a touch of character to an afternoon of Spanish tapas, which cost no more than $8 per plate. If the city becomes too much to handle, escape to Málaga Park, a natural respite in the center of the action where palm trees, fountains and exotic birds live in peace.
