Destinations / Europe

On a recent trip to Stockholm, Sweden, I visited ICEBAR Stockholm in Hotel C. ICEBAR Stockholm by ICEHOTEL is the world’s first permanent icebar, rebuilt every year with a different theme. The interior is carved out of 40 tons of natural ice from the Torne River by ice sculptors from the hotel.

After checking in with the staff, we were given a poncho and gloves to keep warm while inside the bar. Once the group was situated, it was time to head inside the tundra. The bar is kept at 19 degrees Fahrenheit year-round and fits up to 60 people at a time. Before heading to the bar, we walked around the space, taking in the different sculptures and fixtures. This year, the theme was Fata Morgana. Essentially, this concept means one must accept reality is just an illusion. The space featured ice sculptures with bubbles carved inside, structures that served as a magnifying glass and more.

Once we learned more about the theme and sculptures, we headed to the bar to check out the menu. All the drinks came in an ice cup and looked delicious. It took me a while to decide what I wanted, but I ultimately decided on the Mirage, which included vodka, raspberry, strawberry, lime and 7 Up — I highly recommend it. I also tried Fika Time, which had coffee liqueur, amaretto, vanilla and milk.

There were a couple sculptures perfect for a photo opp, which included a half igloo, an ice throne, a full moon and a corner space with unique carvings in the ice. I made sure to take some pictures at these spots before heading out.

Travelers who book a trip to ICEBAR receive one free drink included in the fee, but don’t be shy to go back and try other drinks.
