Visiting the Souks in Marrakech

Tips / Destination

Of all the places to go in Marrakech, the liveliest and most intriguing is the network of markets branching from Jemaa al-Fnaa. With its winding alleys and endless arrays of spices, bags and other Moroccan goods, no visit to this city is complete without exploring the labyrinth they call the souks. Be sure to follow these tips to ensure a good time.

Have a Poker Face

In the west we’re taught to smile and say please and thank you with everything, but that just won’t work in Marrakech. Moroccans can be the quite the salesmen and will approach you at the slightest sign of interest (or without). If you want to keep walking, wear your best poker face and give a polite “no thank you.” Don’t feel bad; if you don’t want to buy anything then the salesmen doesn’t want you to waste their time.

Learn to Barter

It is custom to negotiate a price for almost everything in the souks. Shopkeepers will quote you an exorbitant high number and even brag it’s the wholesale price, but it’s expected for you to counteroffer half of their quote. After an incredulous response and some back and forth, you’ll come to an agreed upon price. Remember it’s all part of the culture for the salesman, so be firm and polite and don’t take it personally when they reject your offer. Also remember if you’re not satisfied with a price, there’s probably another souk offering the same thing.

Prepare to Get Lost

Digital maps have gotten pretty good at mapping the narrow alleyways and side streets, but its not perfect, nor is it preferable. The best way to experience the souks is to wander through them, going whichever direction you fancy. It can also get pretty crowded, so leave your valuables in the hotel and secure your phone, camera and wallet. Wearing sunglasses is also a good idea if you want to avoid approaching salesmen.
