You may already know Waze as a community-driven service helping drivers discover the best, fastest, clearest routes using real-time, user-submitted data. Now, the brand offers Waze Carpool, a way for drivers and riders to save money and the planet at the same time, pairing up with fellow-minded commuters.
The service works using the Waze Rider App, which allows drivers to offer rides and riders to find rides nearby. The app’s mapping capabilities only connects you with individuals within your community, who experience almost identical commutes.
Communication is all handled in-app, including payment. Payment is considered the cost of gas for the trip, and the amount is set in advance. The app will automatically transfer the set amount from the rider to the driver. Since the service was created to cut down on rush hour traffic, it only operates twice daily, during the timeframes when many commuters are going to work and when they’re returning home.
Waze Carpool is not an income opportunity, like Uber or Lyft. Drivers can only accept two ride requests daily and payments received will always be less than or equal to the cost of the drive itself, considering gas prices and car depreciation. Riders must be at least 18 years, and drivers must be at least 21 years. Only one rider is allowed in the car at a time, meaning only one stop during your commute.
Currently, Waze Carpool is available by invitation to select employers and their commuters in San Francisco. However, you can easily sign up to receive consideration when the pilot is expanded to other large U.S. cities. Employers can also learn more about establishing a Waze Carpool for their office, which helps to lessen congestion around their facilities, open up parking spots and cut transportation costs for employees.
