Many people in Oaxaca are involved in the textile industry, especially in towns such as Teotitlan del Valle.
Around 70 percent of the residents are involved in textiles in some way, and the industry is incredibly important to the survival of the town. Tourists can visit the traditional workshops to see how things are done and take away rugs and mats as souvenirs.
Oaxacan weavers used to dye the materials using natural ingredients, but most have now transitioned to cheaper synthetic dyes. These days there are only a handful of weavers who use natural dyed cloth.
The cheaper textiles you see in Oaxaca will invariably be made with synthetic dyes. It can be hard to tell when natural dyes have been used, and unscrupulous sellers have been known to lie about the way textiles were dyed.
If you want to buy natural fabrics, you’ll have to do your research or take an expert with you. The textiles are beautiful, making for amazing rugs and placemats as well as wall hangings.
You can participate in workshops to try your hand at weaving, or simply watch the masters at work. Oaxaca is an important center for the craft, and it would be a shame not to find out more when you’re in the area.
