Study Abroad

James Kenvin checks in weekly from his study abroad semester in London; catch up with him every Wednesday on Trazee Travel.

I can’t believe how fast four months has gone by. It doesn’t feel that long ago I was writing my first article about how unsure I was of my decision to go abroad. It’s funny; looking back now, I have completely fallen in love with London.

For our last night in the city, my friends and I decided to head to The Albert Bridge — one of our favorite spots in London, as well as one of the first places we went when we arrived. The bridge at night is beautifully lit and it’s the perfect spot to stand and look out toward the city skyline. After spending some time mesmerized by this breathtaking site, we decided to cross over the bridge and walk around Battersea Park. We sat on some benches near the Thames River and shared our favorite moments from our time abroad, as well as how weird it was heading back to the United States. We got so caught up in our reminiscing that when we finally did leave, we realized the gates has been locked, so we were stuck inside the park. All of us ended up having to climb a high gate to get out, laughing the entire time. Thankfully, we all got over safely and headed back to our flats.

I absolutely love that this was the last thing to happen to us in London because it describes our experience completely — things may not always go as planned, and may even end up going horribly wrong, but those are the situations that make the best memories. I can’t believe I actually have to leave such a beautiful and magical city. My time abroad was one of the most amazing and eye-opening experiences of my life. The memories I have made and lessons I’ve learned will stick with me forever.

Most importantly, I made connections with some of the smartest, kindest and most interesting people I’ve ever met. I also wanted to express my gratitude to everyone who followed me along my journey these past15 weeks. Although I’m heartbroken to leave a place I’ve come to call home, I’m looking forward to re-entering reality with the new view of the world my experiences abroad have given me.

Where can you find the friendliest airport staff? According to Upgraded Points, at Portland International Airport. The travel company’s study focused on the 50 busiest airports, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Upgraded Points then analyzed Google and Yelp reviews for each airport, noting mentions of “friendly” or “rude” staff or TSA. Mentions were compared to the total number of reviews to calculate a ratio of positive to negative interactions, with each airport scored on a scale of 0 to 5 based on the ratio of positive mentions for a possible score of 50.
