Planning an international road trip for later this year? You’ll want to choose your destination carefully, as some are better than others. Compare the Market, a platform helping shoppers compare insurance, recently conducted a survey to uncover which international destinations are best for a road trip, based on factors such as gas prices, fatal accident likelihood, traffic, car rental costs and road quality.
The study found Spain was overall the best country for a road trip thanks to low car rental costs and, most importantly, few fatal road accidents, at fewer than four deaths per 100,000 people.
Others on the list included Canada thanks to low traffic congestion and agreeable gas prices; the United States, also for its relatively low gas prices; the United Kingdom, with its few fatal road accidents; and Portugal. Among the top 10 best countries for a road trip, Spain had the lowest car rental fees; Switzerland had the least traffic congestion; and Norway had the fewest fatal traffic accidents per 100,000 people.
The study also looked at the worst destinations for a road trip, and found Serbia was the worst choice overall for a road trip due to its poor-quality roads. The same goes for the second-worst destination on the list, Romania. Belgium, Greece and Hungary also scored poorly.
