Visiting Sangay National Park in Ecuador is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The UNESCO World Heritage site features an array of landscapes, from glaciers to cloud forests, moorlands to grasslands. It’s also an extremely biodiverse destination, with more than 3,000 flowering plant species, more than 400 bird species and more than 100 mammal species.

However, at nearly 2,000 square miles, this park is vast, and knowing what to do once you get there can be difficult. Here are a few top recommendations from Ecuador Tourism Board.

Take a Guided Tour to a Volcano

There are three volcanoes within the park’s parameters, two active and one inactive. Take a guided tour to see them all.

Take a Guided Wildlife-Watching Experience

Whether you want to see the Andean condor, mountain tapirs or jaguars, you can find them in Sangay National Park. Take a wildlife-watching excursion to see the park’s diverse wildlife at home in their natural habitats, from the mountains to the rain forests.

Take a Dip in the Hot Springs

Natural thermal baths in the park make the perfect place to relax after a day’s worth of exploring.

See a Historic Monument

Sangay National Park isn’t just all nature and no culture. Near Macas, the Oñate Monument depicts the meeting of Spanish conquistadors and Indigenous populations in the region.
