In northern Japan, on the main island of Honshu, the Tohoku region is often overlooked by travelers just stopping into the country to see popular spots like Tokyo or Kyoto. But if you venture to culturally rich Tohoku, you’ll find plenty to do. Here are just a few suggestions to pique your interest.
Visit the Hot Springs
The hot spring inns in Ginzan Onsen town line the Ginzan River, creating a charming atmosphere with a vintage feel. Take a dip and enjoy the healing waters with a stay at the most popular inn in town, Notoya Ryokan.
Explore the Twelve Lakes
The Twelve Lakes area in Tsugaru Quasi-National Park encompasses not 12 lakes, but, in actuality, 33 lakes and ponds. This lake-filled, forested section of the park was created by an earthquake centuries ago and is now a popular place for hikers from spring and into the fall. Wintertime hiking requires a local guide. Even if you must limit your explorations of this area due to time, be sure to check out Aoike, or The Blue Pond, known for its vibrant hue.
Visit the Samurai Residences in Kakunodate
While Kakunodate no longer serves as the home to Kakunodate Castle, the town still boasts its historic and preserved samurai residences dating back to the 17th century. Visitors are invited to rent a kimono and walk the steps of the samurai who once lived here.
