Tips / Destination

Belize is known as a Caribbean paradise with white-sand beaches and friendly locals.

A two-week trip to the small nation will leave you ample time to experience the best of the beaches and some of the other attractions the country offers. Nestled between Guatemala and Mexico, Belize has a varied ecosystem some travel brochures forget to mention.

Upon arrival into Belize City, skip the crime-ridden metropolis and head to Palencia on a connecting flight. This charming beach town is situated in the south of the country and acts as a gateway to the dense jungle near Punta Gorda.

Of particular interest is Blue Creek, where you can swim in a forested river. Stay a couple of days to try and spot some monkeys.

From here you can head back north to the ruins at Caracol, which remain the tallest man-made structures in the country. After your visit stop back in at the Rio Frio Cave complex for some swimming.

Adventurous souls should consider taking a one-night, two-day trip into Guatemala to visit the magnificent Mayan ruins of Tikal. If you want more relaxation, head straight to Caye Caulker on a boat from Belize City.

The Caye is the epitome of Belize, with white sand and calm waters over coral reefs. Take a fishing and snorkeling trip with a local guide to get a flavor of life on the cayes, or relax at one of the many bars drinking coco loco (coconut water with rum).

From here, hop to Ambergris Caye, the slightly more upmarket choice, before scooting back down to Belize City thoroughly relaxed and ready for your flight home.
