Sometimes taking the longer route somewhere promises the most rewarding experiences, and train travel definitely offers some pretty incredible views and sights, especially compared to air travel. But some train routes are truly unbeatable when it comes to outlooks and panoramic views. Where can you find some of the most scenic train journeys in the world?
Experts at Japan Rail Pass recently looked at the most popular scenic train routes in the world and compared ticket prices with popularity, traveler reviews and journey times to find which train routes come out on top as best for travelers seeking an unforgettable train experience.
The Bernina Express through the Swiss Alps ranks as the most scenic train journey in the world according to the study. Traveling from Chur or St. Moritz in Switzerland to Tirano, Italy, this four-hour route takes passengers through the Swiss Alps, passing glaciers, alpine lakes and snow-capped peaks. Passengers especially love the panoramic carriages with large, glass windows and roofs.
The Flåm Railway in Norway takes the second spot thanks to its unparalleled views of Norway’s dramatic landscapes. The train ascends from Flåm to Myrdal, passing deep fjords, waterfalls, snow-capped mountains and valleys. And at $47 per person, this journey is a can’t-miss.
Some of the other most scenic train journeys taking top spots include Kyle Line in Inverness, Scotland. On this train, passengers see the Scottish Highlands in all its beauty, traversing glens, lochs and villages. The Sagano Romantic Train in Kinki, Japan, also ranks high, traveling through the Sagano Arashiyama region and by the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. The less than 30-minute journey costs just $5 per person.
