Ever heard of puddling? Not many have, but this unique travel trend involves visiting destinations teeming with small lakes and large ponds for outdoor adventures galore. And the best place to experience this new travel trend? None other than New Hampshire, a state home to more than 1,000 lakes and ponds under 500 acres.
Go puddling at these beautiful New Hampshire locations and experience the hype for yourself:
On the outskirts of historic Hillsborough is this relatively unknown gem and the only lake in the country with a former president’s birthplace under its waters. Franklin Pierce preceded Lincoln and was born in a small cabin flooded when the lake filled. Today, visitors can enjoy fishing (and ice fishing in winter), boating, kayaking, swimming, sailing, biking, camping, cabin rentals, tubing, hiking and more.

Situated between Lake Winnisquam and Winnipesaukee, this lake can be found in the small city of Laconia. Endless experiences and events await here, including swimming, sightseeing, spas, boating, beaches, sled dog race championships, bike week and a big July 4 celebration. Make a full day of the lake and end the night at Lake Opechee Inn and Spa.
This Grafton County lake sits in the Lakes Region of the state. The filming site for On Golden Pond, Little Squam Lake is ideal for fishing, snowshoeing and hiking. Rest up for the night at The Inn on Golden Pond.

Enjoy swimming, boating and fishing at this elusive lake. Fishing enthusiasts might even catch Champion-class largemouth bass, but even if unlucky with this fish, the lake teems with smallmouth bass, chain pickerel and bullheads.
As its name suggests, this crystal-clear lake is ideal for water activities like sailing, swimming, water skiing, tubing, fishing, kayaking and ladder golf. Opt for a stay at Cottages for a truly immersive puddling experience.
